'SADDLEWORTH From the Air'

Saddleworth Historical Society will launch their 1999 Festival Publication with an illustrated lecture by Professor G. D. B. Jones of Manchester University at 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday, 2nd June in the Museum.

The coloured air-photographs will illustrate Saddleworth in its landforms and its history: Mesolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age with the Roman Road from Chester to York where it passes through Castleshaw Roman Forts.

Medieval remains are followed by land enclosures and the early roads, canal and railway. Early industrial sites lead to modern settlements and centres of population. Special Festival Price: £9.95

'Further Border Lines'

Saddleworth Writers have brought out a new publication to coincide with the Festival and members will be reading from it on two occasions during Festival Week.

In this their second anthology, Saddleworth Writers present ‘slices of life’ in a wide variety of literary styles: poetry, prose, humorous catches, local stories and dialect to bring you smiles, tears and sighs of nostalgia!

The book will be launched in Uppermill Library on Wednesday, 2nd June at 10.45 a.m.: there will also be a chance to hear the group in the marquee in Furlane Garden on Saturday, June 5th at 2.00 p.m. There they will share the afternoon with inspired piano duettists, Judy Lund and Peter Mallinson.

The members of this informal group of non-too-serious writers meet in Uppermill Library once a month to give each other encouragement and guidance. They are also given unstinting support by librarian Judy Lamb and Literature Development Officer, Colin Brown, who have arranged writing workshops and talks by visiting authors.

The group welcomes new members and hopes you will enjoy this contribution to the life of our community. Price: £3.90 or a special reduced price of £5.00 for "Further Border Lines" and the first anthology, "Border Lines".
