Stephen Threlfall studied 'cello at the Royal Northern College of Music with Bruno Shrecker and Donald McCall. He later studied with Raphael Wallfisch and the late Maurice Gendron. He is a founder member of the Arensky Piano Trio, which was formed in 1980 and made its South Bank debut in 1982.

He has established a considerable reputation for numerous recital and chamber performances including recitals and broadcasts for television and radio in Italy and South Africa as well as for the BBC. He has also performed the great Schubert Quintet with the Allegri Quartet and all the major cello concertos, most recently those by Elgar, Dvorak and Brahms.

For a number of years he was Sub Principal cellist with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and also played with many of the country's other leading orchestras.

Stephen is a keen arranger of music for cello ensemble and since his participation in a European Conductors Seminar in 1985 he has become well known as a conductor of both orchestras and choirs.

He became Director of Music at Chetham's in 1995.

Tonight's programme

Nicholas Jones was appointed Head of School of Strings at Chetham's in 1997.

He was cellist in the Bochmann String Quartet, with whom he toured extensively, and principal cellist and soloist with the English String Orchestra. He toured throughout the USA and Europe with the orchestra's principal Guest Conductor, Lord Menuhin, appearing as soloist and making a number of recordings for Nimbus. In 1996 he was invited to direct the orchestra for a series of concerts in which he also performed Haydn's C major Cello Concerto.

He is Artistic Director of Musicfest, the Aberystwyth International Festival and Summer School and is regularly invited to teach and give master classes internationally.

Tonight's programme

Murray McLachlan is one of Britain's leading concert pianists. His perform-ances have consistently received outstanding critical acclaim for intelligent and sensitive interpretations and superb technical ability.

As Head of Keyboard at Chetham's he is also a committed teacher and regularly gives master classes around the UK.

He has appeared as concerto soloist with many leading UK orchestras and he has toured extensively in the USA, the Soviet Union, Europe and the Far East. He was awarded a knighthood by the Order of St John of Jerusalem in recognition of his services to music in Malta.

During the 1998-99 season Murray appeared as concerto soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the RLPO, the London Concert Orchestra and the Hallé.

Tonight's programme

Cathrine Perkins was born in Leicestershire and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Patrick Ireland.

Since then she has been Head of Music in a Toxteth Comprehensive, taught in the Junior Department of the RNCM and is now Teacher of Lower School Strings at Chetham's.

Cathrine is the Principal Viola of the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.

Nicholas Oliver was born in London in 1967 and began piano lessons with his father at the age of six. He spent four years at the Purcell School for young musicians before gaining a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. Postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music followed with Marjorie Clementi, Martin Roscoe and Ka Kit Tam.

He won several prizes at both colleges for solo and chamber music performances.

He won the Young Pianist of the Year Award in 1984 and second prize at the 1991 Dudley International Piano Competition. Nicholas broadcasts frequently and performances abroad have taken him to France, Germany, Ireland, Holland and the USA.

He is on the piano accompaniment staff and a chamber music tutor at Chetham's

Tonight's programme

David Chatterton studied on the Joint Course at the Royal Northern College of Music and Manchester University under Alan Stringer and Howard Snell.

As a freelance trumpet player he worked with the RLPO, CBSO, Manchester Camerata, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and the Northern Sinfonia amongst others. David spent several years teaching trumpet at the University of Huddersfield and in the field of Music Technology at University College Salford.

David joined the full-time staff of Chetham's in 1993.

Tonight's programme

John Dickinson was born in New Zealand and from a brass band background came to England to play with Morris Motors Band. After two years at the Guildhall School of Music, he became second trumpet in the Royal Scottish Orchestra and later Assistant Principal trumpet. A year as Principal Trumpet with the BBC Scottish Orchestra led to his appointment as Principal with the Hallé Orchestra, a position he held for seventeen years.

He was appointed Head of Wind, Brass and Percussion at Chetham's in 1986 and for many years has taught at the Royal Northern College of Music.

From 1991 to 1996, John was Music Director of the multi-cultural Aberdeen International Youth Festival.

Tonight's programme

Thomas Kemp was educated at Chetham's and St Catharine's College, Cambridge. He works extensively in this country and abroad as recitalist and chamber musician and regularly broadcasts on Radio 3.

He has worked with ensembles such as the English Chamber Orchestra, Cambridge New Music Players and has been a guest principal with the Hallé, Ulster, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras.

His ensemble, Chamber Domaine is in much demand.

Thomas has toured the USA and the Middle East and is a Visiting Teacher of violin and chamber music at Chetham's.

Tonight's programme

Andrew Long went to study on a full scholarship to St Mary's Music School at the age of fifteen, having been chosen by Scottish Television to portray a new student entering the school for a documentary programme. During this time he was invited on a tour of Germany and Belgium where, in Antwerp, he performed Bruch's Concerto in D minor to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the liberation of Belgium.

His successful tour led to him being invited on two visits to Norway, firstly to play The Lark Ascending then to play recitals in the beautiful stave churches.

Andrew is a busy concerto player, guest leader and recitalist and recent engagements have included a tour of Poland and a Brahms recital series.

An enthusiastic teacher, he currently teaches at Chetham's and has his own teaching studio in Sheffield.

Tonight's programme

Tom Goodman graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with A BA (Mus.) degree and a Credit in performance.

He is now enjoying a busy freelance career with the Hallé, Liverpool Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata orchestras.

Tom has been bass tutor at the RNCM Junior Department for three years and teaches at Chetham's.

He is currently studying for post-graduate and professional performing diplomas at the RNCM.
